What is the Big Book?

The "Big Book" is the back bone of Alcoholics Anonymous.

The Guidelines spelled out in this book have helped people recover from Alcoholism for decades. Written in 1939 by Bill W. and others the first 164 pages have not significantly changed in all these years. If you feel you could be an Alcoholic this book is definitely worth reading

The majority of AA Members read and re-read the Big Book to help them through their recovery and life's problems. If you are new to the program and don't have a Big Book, the majority of AA Groups will give you one for free to start you on your recovery.

The Big Book got its name from the very first printing. In 1939 the Big Book cost $3.50, which is worth $54.00 today. The founders of AA were concerned that this would seem to expensive, so they requested that the printer use the thickest paper available and added an extra 1" of margin to make the pages larger. Even though the Big Book is now printed as a normal book, it has kept its original nickname.
